Gilmore City was first plotted in 1884 shortly after the railroad had been built through the territory. The name for the area was initially Blooming Prairie, but was changed to Gilmore City in the early 1880s.

What makes your community unique or special— something only locals would know or appreciate?
Gilmore City is the kind of place where people genuinely look out for one another. Neighbors know neighbors, and when something needs to get done - whether it’s a community project, a weather event, or a local fundraiser - people step up without being asked. That sense of pride and responsibility for our town is something you really only understand once you’ve lived here.
Are there any annual events, traditions, or landmarks your town is especially proud of?
Our community takes pride in local traditions and events that bring residents together throughout the year. From community celebrations like Fun Days in August and fundraisers from local groups and Fire & EMS Crews. These gatherings reinforce the close-knit nature of Gilmore City and give residents a chance to reconnect and support one another.

If someone were visiting for the first time, what’s one place or activity they absolutely shouldn’t miss?
A visit to Gilmore City wouldn’t be complete without learning about our limestone quarry, Martin Marietta. As the Limestone Capital of Iowa, the quarry represents both our history and our economic backbone. It’s a point of pride for the community and a unique part of what makes Gilmore City stand out.

His guidance and responsiveness have made a huge difference, and I wouldn’t be as comfortable or confident using the software without his support.
What would you tell another municipality that’s considering partnering with FREY?
I would tell them that while there can be a learning curve - especially as FREY has expanded and acquired communities in Iowa - their adaptation and perseverance have been impressive. They are willing to go above and beyond to adjust, change, or even create solutions to meet state-specific requirements, recognizing that every state operates differently. That level of commitment makes them a strong and reliable partner.
